Baby Alpaca

The Fiber of the Gods

Baby Alpaca FAQ

What is baby alpaca?

Baby alpaca is one of the fineness fiber grades of alpaca wool, not an actual baby alpaca! Usually found on the chest, it's the softest part of an alpaca.

How does baby alpaca wool compare to sheep wool?

Baby alpaca wool is lighter and up to 5x warmer than sheep wool because alpaca fibers are completely hollow creating a greater thermal capacity. Also, unlike sheep wool, alpaca wool is 100% hypoallergenic!

Is alpaca wool cruelty-free?

Yes! Our alpaca wool is sourced from alpacas that live in their high-altitude, natural habitat: the Andes Mountains of Perú. Once a year, alpaca wool is sheared to be then sorted, combed, spun, and dyed into beautiful colors.

What's a normal day for an alpaca?

In Perú it's basically hanging around other alpacas eating ichu* all day.

Do we have a symbiotic relationship with alpacas?

In Perú we do and have kept a symbiotic relationship for over 5,000 years since the Incan Empire! Alpaca wool is still the main source of income for many Quechua people with generations of handweaving traditions. Alpacas are treated like family in Perú and their wool is still commonly known as the fiber of the Gods across the Andes Mountains.
